Contemplating the advancing world of AI and Robotics.
Today, it's a reality.
We are the last humans.
Engineered birth asks us to imagine human life before it arrives in the world. Advances in reproductive technology, embryo screening, gene editing research, and artificial womb concepts raise deep questions that reach far beyond medicine.
Some hopes are compassionate. Parents may want to avoid severe inherited disease. Doctors may want safer pregnancies. Researchers may imagine a future where fewer children suffer from conditions we can prevent. These hopes deserve care, not fear.
Yet every tool that can heal can also be used to sort, measure, and rank. Once we gain more control over birth, we may feel pressure to design children around social ideals. Height, intelligence, beauty, temperament, physical ability, and even emotional traits could become objects of selection.
That possibility unsettles me because it shifts the meaning of birth. A child may no longer be received as a mystery, but assembled as a project.
Art helps me sit through complex thoughts and emotions.
As we move toward a future where even birth can be engineered and automated, I find myself wondering:
What is the essence of a soul?
We are more than water, tissue, and bone.
More than biology.
Like an old-school human, I'm standing at the edge of a new era, watching the future arrive and asking what it truly means to be human.
When people speak of the soul, they often mean different things.
For some, the soul is spiritual. It is the divine breath, the inner light, the part of a person that belongs to God or to a reality beyond matter.
In many Indian traditions, the self is considered deeper than the body and mind, though the interpretations differ across philosophies. In other faiths too, the soul carries moral and eternal weight.
For others, the soul is emotional language. It names depth, empathy, conscience, memory, and love. To say someone has soul is to say they are not empty. Their presence carries feeling.
While I am the last of the humans.
Sitting with a brush and paper.
Contemplating existence.
I appreciate the human joy art brings me.
