A Journey Through Color, Chaos, and Curiosity

A reflection on Universal Ganesha by Roshni Ali, an artist from Goa—an exploration of myth, material, and meaning. Created during a time of global unrest, the painting draws from the Mahabharata to question how greed shapes our choices, distorts wisdom, and quietly leads to conflict, while inviting a deeper understanding of abundance, balance, and awareness.

The Hilltop Friday Market in Anjuna is not just a marketplace; it’s a cultural hub where the spirit of Goa’s counterculture thrives. For an artist like me, this space offers more than just a sales opportunity. It’s a chance to be part of a living, breathing culture that values creativity over commerce. People approached my stall with curiosity. Some connected with the ancient motifs, while others appreciated the modern style and colours.

India’s ancient temples tell stories of life philosophy. Visiting the Hoysala temples, Hampi, Mahabalipuram, and Ellora, I was struck by the grandeur of our heritage and the powerful myths behind each site. These myths reveal sacred archetypes—universal symbols and characters that explore the nature of reality. Returning to Goa, I noticed these archetypes reflected in the vibrant contemporary music scene.

“Space Ganesha” is a vibrant acrylic artwork by Roshni Ali that reimagines the beloved Hindu deity as he steps out of a cosmic portal. Accompanied by his loyal mouse companions—one soaring in a flying saucer, the other scrambling for crumbs—the piece playfully explores the mindset of abundance. Created in September 2024 before the Ganpati festival, it celebrates perspective, energy, and the cosmic joy of Ganesh Chaturthi along the Konkan coast.

“Kali’s Channeling” is an acrylic on paper that embodies the fierce power of the goddess Kali. Painted in swirling blues and purples, with her wild hair, red tongue, and hibiscus garland, this artwork explores rage as sacred energy. Inspired by personal and collective grief, it reflects the Dark Feminine archetype in Jungian psychology — reminding us that when channeled, rage can transform into light, healing, and strength.
