Theme: Chaos, Cosmic Battle, and the Power of the Sun

In Wrath of Apophis, I paint one of the most fearsome figures in Egyptian mythology — the giant serpent Apophis (Apep), eternal enemy of the sun god Ra.
Apophis was not just a snake, but the embodiment of chaos and darkness. Each night, as Ra sailed his solar barque through the underworld, Apophis rose to attack, trying to swallow the sun and plunge the world into endless night. Yet with every dawn, Ra triumphed, reminding us that light is never fully defeated.
In this artwork, Apophis towers as a giant cobra before the pyramids, powerful enough to break an obelisk — once a sacred marker of humanity’s devotion to the sun. Behind the chaos, the sun burns bold and radiant, a reminder of resilience and renewal. Scattered skulls on the ground speak of the cost of darkness, yet they also frame the victory of light breaking through.
This myth is more than a cosmic story — it is a mirror for our own lives. Each sunrise is a gift, each new day a triumph of light over shadow. Ra’s journey teaches us that no matter how dark the night, the sun will rise again. And within each of us lies that same light — a fire that resists chaos, a brilliance that carries us forward.
Wrath of Apophis is both a warning and a blessing: darkness is always near, but so is light. We should hold each day as precious, grateful for every sunrise, and remember that the power of Ra — the power of renewal — also lives within us.
When you look at this piece, take a breath of gratitude: the sun has risen today, and so have you.
